Overview

The second part: Brakhage’s layering of images spends less time with images of war, and begins filtering in scenes of Vienna and his home in Colorado. He sets up a comparison between “Kubelka’s Vienna” and his own.

Hackney Marshes – November 4th 1977

Jan 1, 1977

An improvisation recorded over the course of one day, starting at dawn and finishing after dusk. The film was edited in camera and shot from one camera position in the middle of one of the 112 football pitches that cover Hackney Marsh, a location chosen because of the similarities between the surrounding buildings and objects (identical blocks of flats, goalposts etc.). By cutting between precisely matched framings of similar objects, illusions of movement were produced, disrupting representational readings of the landscape. Unforeseen events occurring in the vicinity were also recorded, determining to some extent the subsequent filming. Through selection of shots and changes in cutting pace and speed of camera movement, the film fluctuates between record and abstraction.

About Buenos Aires

Mar 1, 2006

Eleven young film-makers got together to collaborate in this atypical project. Atypical not only because of its technical specs, but because of its narrative structure. There are several scenes with only the city in common, and more as a conceptual presence at that than as a precise geography. None of those scenes contains a single "story": Each one of them is part of a larger situation that we cannot see, as though the beginning and end of each "story" had to be filled in by the audience.

Dislocated Third Eye Series III: Bismillah /In Four Movements/

Jan 1, 1984

Against a repetitive trance-inducing loop of four carefully excerpted bars from “Ntsikana’s Bell” (1974, with Johnny Dyani), the enigmatic Sulejman Ferenčak—one of fifty members of the slippery production network OM, which concocted dozens of small-gauge gems in the late 70s and 80s--launches and spins his Super 8 tripod-attached camera in a methodical sequence of 360-degree rotations. Sky and earth are euphorically, deliriously transcended in what is not so much an homage to Michael Snow’s La Région Centrale, but rather its spiritual detonation from within.

This, then, finishes eleven years of editing drawing on 30-some years of photography. I will surely work autobiographically again, but the modes of SINCERITY and DUPLICITY seem completed with this film which on the one hand is as simple in its integrity-of-light as those follow-the-ball "sing-along" early silent movies and on the other as complicated as teen-age metamorphosis. Childhood dissolves in flame, struck from the hearth.
