Overview

Originating in Curitiba in 2013 and spreading to Portugal, Spain, Mexico and Brazil, “Basket das Excluídas” consists of an LGBTQIA+ group gathering to play basketball on a public court in the city. They vogue and resist with their bodies around the city, challenging norms and celebrating diversity while engaging in a game that expresses identity and a form of resistance.

One morning, Leonardo Galicia wakes up with a dull pain and an intense fever. After a pandemic experience that made him aware of his mortality, the last thing Leonardo expected was an HIV-reactive result.  The illness caused by the virus takes hold of Leonardo's body and forces him to take an indefinite break while recovering in a hospital. Based on the experience of his short film Les Indes galantes, the artist updates Jean-Philippe Rameau's baroque masterpiece (1735) by bringing together lyric song and urban dance. The choreography is entrusted to Bintou Dembélé who supervises dancers from krump, popping, voguing or even experimental hip hop. From rehearsals to the Premiere, Philippe Béziat films the meeting of urban dancers with the lyric institution and invites the spectator to share a human and artistic experience.
