Overview

In the Norwegian lands south of Trondheim, not far from the Swedish border, temperatures can drop to -50°C in winter. Yet this harsh climate lends the landscape a special beauty. Ella Kjosnes, 16, is a sled dog leader. She prepares her six huskies for the 200-kilometer Femund race. While the lakes and rivers freeze over, Jan Moen goes ice fishing in the mysterious Hessdalen valley. If he doesn't catch anything, he may be able to observe the strange and partly unexplained light phenomena that regularly appear in the valley's skies. Not far away, Tone and Rolf Eriksen run a hotel on a lake that is only accessible by plane in winter.

Auf der Oder

Documentary reports on the annual icing of the Oder in the 160-kilometer border area between the GDR and the People's Republic of Poland. Icebreakers from both countries with experienced skippers join forces to make the international waterway between Frankfurt and Szczecin navigable again. Everyone works hard as a team and even a broken-down ship cannot stop them from achieving their goal. A look back at the winter of 1947 with its flooding shows what the freezing of the river and the subsequent thaw can do if the ice floes are not drained into the Baltic Sea via Lake Dammsch in good time. The skippers from both countries have known each other for years and trust each other; the camaraderie that has developed on the Oder unites the people, they control the river in winter for the common benefit of all.

The Vinland Mystery

Mentioned in Icelandic manuscripts and speculated about for over two centuries, Vinland is known as "the place where the wild grapes grow" and was thought to be on the eastern coast between Virginia and Newfoundland. In 1960 a curious group of house mounds was uncovered at l'Anse aux Meadows in northern Newfoundland by Drs. Helge Ingstad and Anne Stine Ingstad of Norway. Added to the United Nations World Heritage List, l'Anse aux Meadows is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
