Overview

Scuggs, the utterly unpleasant super of a Bronx tenement is driven to desperate measures by an innocent-appearing, but manipulative 11 year-old girl. Based on the graphic novel by American Master Will Eisner, Meinecke combines larger-than-life characters, borrows from the traditions of melodrama and applies a visual language derived from German Expressionists to create a haunting tale, that won particular favor with New York critics.

My Night at Maud's

The Catholic Jean-Louis runs into an old friend, the Marxist Vidal, in Clermont-Ferrand around Christmas. Vidal introduces Jean-Louis to the modestly libertine, recently divorced Maud and the three engage in conversation on religion, atheism, love, morality and Blaise Pascal's life and writings on philosophy, faith and mathematics. Jean-Louis ends up spending a night at Maud's. Jean-Louis' Catholic views on marriage, fidelity and obligation make his situation a dilemma, as he has already, at the very beginning of the film, proclaimed his love for a young woman whom, however, he has never yet spoken to.

Naïve young Muhasab is asked to accompany his more dependable friend, Mujahed, on a voyage up the Nile to Cairo. Once there, they will sell their boat, the "Bride of the Nile," in order to buy a barge that will make their village elders more competitive in business and trade. Matters become even more complicated when Nargis, a scheming carnival dancer, is discovered hiding out in the cargo hold of the "Bride of the Nile."

Tears of Love

A young man with a talent for singing cannot find his way in it. He finds work as a driver for a pasha, and by chance discovers that this pasha is trying to steal the money of his niece, who is the guardian of her property. He decides to reveal this theft to the girl he has already begun to love. She lies to him and distances herself from him, but with time she discovers that her uncle is actually stealing from her and is trying to marry her to his son in order to seize everything. She returns once again, regretting it, to her lover.
