Overview

Rome, 1870. Opponents of the church power are being sent to prison. Some of the exhausted prisoners are asking for the mercy of Pope. Others, like Augusto Parenti, prefer to fight for their rights until the end. His wife, Teresa is a simple woman, who gets involved with the rebels.

Eva, a mysterious woman who lives in the forest, sets a field of sunflowers on fire. She tells the police commissioner who arrests her that she did it because the children are in danger and must be protected. Eva believes she has a mission and she talks like a preacher, a sort of Joan of Arc. She sees strange blue lights in the sky. Her case is associated with the mysterious disappearance of children that have been occurring in the area, even if the youngsters seem to gladly follow her around. In the meantime, in China, a woman is exasperated because her daughter is sick.

This film is very much a docudrama which portrays the difficulties of Italian life circa 1963 due to the absence of a divorce law. Five scenarios with different actors portray realistic situations where divorce is clearly warranted but, because marriage was strictly in the purview of the Catholic Church at that time, which strictly forbade divorce, these people are shown to suffer the consequences in their daily lives. Italy got its first civilian divorce law in 1970.
