Overview

After years apart, brothers Horst and Franz reunite. Horst is dealing with Alzheimer’s, while Franz is in debt, and sees his brother’s unspent inheritance as the solution to his financial problems. Every year, on the anniversary of their parents’ death, Cynthia, Bryce, and Miles gather at the family summer home to reminisce and have brunch at their parents’ favorite restaurant. But the siblings have never fully gotten along, and to make matters worse, Cynthia is in a financial rut this year. When she proposes to sell the summer house, Bryce pushes back with full force. The two turn to Miles for the deciding vote, but Miles doesn’t care all that much about the house: he is hung up on the fact that his longtime girlfriend, Gabby, recently left Thus, the weekend unfolds with the siblings’ relationships unravelling into dramatic, conflicted fever dreams of self-identity, broken bonds, and repressed love.

Our intrepid couple (wonderfully played by Betty Balfour and Michael Hogan) have to face everything life throws at them with fortitude, from the Great War (a son in the RAF and zeppelin raids) to a raging oil fire during the Great Strike. The inimitable Gordon Harker provides sterling support. The film the couple watch at the cinema is the 1915 version of My Old Dutch, starring Albert Chevalier (writer of the original music hall song) and Florence Turner. As the complete silent film is now believed to be lost, this 1934 version contains the only surviving footage.
