i.Mirror by China Tracy

Jun 10, 2007

Cao Fei recorded her experiences within the online social platform Second Life. The result is a wistful, surreal vision of an alternative reality sprung from the pop culture fantasies and hyper-consumerism of contemporary urban China, while also trying to transcend its real-life limitations. It can be seen as an answer to the challenge posed by River Elegy: how to envision a new Chinese destiny founded on principles of individuality, creativity, discovery, and freedom. The film also reflects the contemporary condition of the virtual supplanting our experience of the real.

The Modern Day Consumer

Jan 1, 1987

Depicts modern humanity as a product of the industrial revolution, which formed and cultivated a society based on mass consumption. This consumerism is illustrated through portrayals of our feeding, mating, and grooming habits, as well as ritual gatherings and retirement that manufacture a dependency on the capitalist system. Burman’s highly fantasized stop-motion claymation critiques the absurdity of integrating capitalism and humanity, which has altered the human experience into a measurement of one’s ability to mass produce and mass consume.
