Amos Gitai returns to the occupied territories for the first time since his 1982 documentary FIELD DIARY. WEST OF THE JORDAN RIVER describes the efforts of citizens, Israelis and Palestinians, who are trying to overcome the consequences of occupation. Gitai's film shows the human ties woven by the military, human rights activists, journalists, mourning mothers and even Jewish settlers. Faced with the failure of politics to solve the occupation issue, these men and women rise and act in the name of their civic consciousness. This human energy is a proposal for long overdue change.

Despite their children's reluctance, Radi and Mounira, a 65-year-old puppeteer couple, set off on tour between Israel and Palestine in their outdated van. They are exhausted from having to set up and take down the stage, from performing three shows in a row in front of hundreds of wild children under a burning sky. Lost in Jericho, frightened by the bombs falling near Majd Al Shams, destabilized by the Bedouin children of the Negev unable to determine their own identity, they no longer know if their mission is still relevant. Safeguarding the identity of their people through their shows, but at what cost? A quest for Palestinian identity.

The National Parks Project

Apr 30, 2011

In an increasingly urban nation, Canada’s national parks are a treasured escape into extraordinary beauty and rugged wilderness. If the Group of Seven were an introduction to the landscape’s majesty, National Parks Project is the next logical chapter. Fifty-two contemporary artists from across the country, whose talents are as diverse as the parks they set out to explore, used their surroundings as a source of inspiration to blend musical and cinematic skills into collaboratively crafted vignettes. Epic in its ambition to celebrate these locales during Parks Canada’s centennial year, this omnibus film resonates with the knowledge that our unprotected land is more vulnerable than ever. Including films by Zacharius Kunuk, Peter Lynch, Sturla Gunnarsson and John Walker, and music by Sarah Harmer, Sam Roberts, Cadence Weapon and The Besnard Lakes, among many others, National Parks Project is a one-of-a-kind documentary experience.
