Overview

Broadway star Mona Mainard retires from the stage for marriage to rising attorney John Norton and watches his career climb. Over time she becomes concerned with his at times unscrupulous ways of getting convictions. When her brother is accused of murder Norton refuses to give up the case despite being aware of his innocence because a victory could land him the governorship. Mona takes extreme steps to bring him to his senses and exonerate her brother.

Mendoza starts a revolution against Alvarez when he and Clay will not go along with the plan, but he eventually is defeated after a long battle. Clay then is able to pursue his relationship with Hope, Langham's daughter, who has accompanied her father to South America.

Later, when she is safely returned to her parents and her fiancé, Roy, they see a man hurt in the park. It proves to be John. Marie recognizes him and takes him home. He becomes a servant in the family. They are giving a reception. John is serving the guests. He finds a note pushed into his hand as he stands before the curtained window. It says that unless he hands over a gem, which is displayed among the wedding presents, the crooks will get him. He tries to steal the jewel, but Marie prevents it. She then causes the arrest of the crooks who are waiting to receive the jewel.

He is carried to the town, with a rope about his neck, to be lynched. Ruth is frantic, but helpless until she can convince the townsfolk of his innocence. Lester is released and with Ruth, he returns to civilization.

Doña Aguila's kindness causes Inez to repent and to refuse to carry out the plan; Tovar and his men attack the rancho to acquire an emerald necklace, and Inez rides for aid. Prescott, revealing himself to be an insurance agent, wins the heart of Inez, and Doña Aguila adopts her as her legal daughter.
