Overview

Valerie already sees the bright future alongside her boyfriend, Ewan. Obviously it feels like a punch in the face for Valerie when Ewan suddenly comes out to her as gay. To top it all, Ewan disappears shortly after. With a heavy head, Valerie starts searching for her ex-boyfriend and quickly meets Fynn, who seems to be closer to Ewan than she thought.

I Faresonen is a combination of a documentary and fictional approach to the problem of alcoholism -- or alcohol dependency. Tackling a problem common to other Nordic countries as well, director Bjoern Breigutu has focused on the life of sailors, among others, and how alcohol is used or abused in that sector of the population. This was the Norwegian entry at the 1961 Berlin Film Festival.

But director Luis Urquiza chooses to structure his film through the largely uncomprehending, wondering eyes of 13-year-old Julián, who travels from the arms of his loving pastoral family into the austere, hallowed halls of the seminary. Singling out the boy as his intimate disciple, installing him in his palatial private quarters and redubbing him “Sacramento Santos,” Father Ángel begins Julian’s instruction into the mysteries of “perfect obedience,” whose cardinal rule is: Never question a superior’s actions.
